Which Is Better - Gas Vs. Electric Power Washers

Power washers are found in many shapes, sizes, colors and levels of portability. Like many other home power tools, the two major categories of power washers are those with either gasoline or electric motors. Before buying a power washer, you can go through the following comparisons, so as to make your search clear:

GAS POWER WASHERS

ELECTRIC POWER WASHERS

Pros

  • More powerful and durable
  • Usually between 2000 and 3000 PSI, best for heavy-duty tasks
  • Handles big jobs like large decks and siding
  • Also removes stains

Pros

  • Smaller and lighter than gas-powered models
  • Easier to store and maintain
  • Can be used indoors and outdoors
  • Less expensive
  • More powerful models, up to 1600 PSI, are best for most jobs

Cons

  • Need more maintenance than electric ones and have to be winterized in cold climates
  • More expensive
  • May be too powerful, or more than you need if you mainly want a washer for your car, bike or occasional small jobs.
  • Increases the risk of injury to yourself or others

Cons

  • Many inexpensive models are known as "throwaways" because it's easier to replace one than repair it
  • Not enough power to do big jobs and doesn't clean as fast
  • Needs few safety features when using an electric washer around water
  • Double insulation and a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)helps to  reduce risk of electric shock
  • Recommended to only run 100 hours a year (about two hours a week)

Uses

  • It will always be used outdoors.
  • Areas being cleaned are large (driveway, deck, siding on a 2-story house)
  • Speed is important to you

Uses

  • Will be used indoors or in unventilated areas
  • Areas being cleaned are small (furniture, mower, car, boat)
  • An appropriate electrical outlet is accessible
